Divorcing Through This Pandemic? Here Are Some Tips to Help You Through This Time of Uncertainty

1. You are Not Alone

This pandemic has impacted every single person’s life. It is important to remember that the opposing party in your case is most likely experiencing similar obstacles as you are.

2. Attorneys Are Still Working

Per Governor Inslee, Legal services are considered as ‘essential’. Here at Bains Law Firm we have been working remotely during this time. Although, we have not been able to have face to face interactions with clients, we have maintained communication through video conferencing, phone calls and emails. Despite the current-day limitations we have been able to stay productive and on top of all our cases and new ones too.

3. Forms of Communication Are Changing

Communicating through telephone and email is not always ideal but we ask you to be receptive of these forms of communication. We are having to adapt to new ways of doing things.

4. Video Conferencing

Video conferencing is a great tool to communicate not only with your attorney but to stay in contact with your children or spouse. We have also had the opportunity during this time to use video conferencing as a forum for mediations and arbitrations.

5. Follow Your Court Orders

When you finally are able to have your day in court, you want to be able to hold your head up high and know that you have done all that you could to follow the court's orders.

6. Keep Records

Keep records of everything, there is a good chance you may need it later in your case. Keep records of text messages, emails, records of payments, receipts for expenditures and even a visitation calendar. It is far better to go into court with proof for your position, rather than trying to convince the court merely through your words that you are telling the truth.

7. Be an Active Parent

Go the extra mile to get your kids through this troubled time. Spend time on schoolwork and ensure that they have the assistance that they need. Stick to a reasonable schedule and hold them to reasonable expectations. Find new ways to interact with your kids if you are unable to see them currently due to health precautions. Video conferencing allows you to spend time with them, read together, play games and even just talking about their day. Remember that this is still a very confusing and sad time for them, be patient, reassure them and ensure that they feel safe and loved.

8. Ask Questions

If you have any questions during your divorce, do not be afraid to call or email your attorney. If you do not have an attorney currently, we offer a free consultation to speak to you about your case. You can reach us at 253-838-3377 or send an email to office@bainslawfirm.com.
